Zanesville defeated Newark 41-7 last night in the 106th meeting between these two schools. One of Ohio's oldest and closest rivalries has featured major shifts in momentum and Zanesville proved once again that the Blue Devils are still clearly the superior program. When the game became 41-0 after the first drive of the 2nd half, Zanesville pulled the starters and played its JVs the rest of the way. The score could have been worse for Newark if not for a long TD play that was called back on a cheap call. And even though the Blue Devils played their JVs almost the entire second half, the JVs defeated Newark's JV team this morning 52-6 with the score 46-0 at the end of three quarters. Although I'm pleased to see Zanesville's program continuing to improve at all levels, I'm sad to see such a long standing rivalry lose its luster. And from the looks of things, I don't believe this tide will turn anytime soon.
