Q&A with West Branch running back Boston Mulinix

How did the high school football season go overall?
“We had a good year. I'm very proud of my team and the accomplishments we made this year, and we worked extremely hard before and during the season. Obviously the season ended before we all had hoped, but we improved tremendously as a unit from week 1 up to week 14. We had many injuries that we dealt with this season, but we had tough guys who would sacrifice anything for West Branch football, including Coach Cooper, and I couldn't be more proud of us.”

What are your plans now with sports and workouts?
“Now that the season's been over for some time I've been spending the majority of my time lifting and training at Unbreakable's Gym and at my home weight room, while also getting more time to focus more on my schoolwork in the classroom. That's pretty much going to be the plan until high school baseball starts in February, then that will be my primary focus.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I think that we will be very successful next year, obviously losing Dru Desheids hurts us, but all of us have a lot of confidence in our will-be senior Beau Alazaus to step up at QB and lead us throughout the year. We have had a lot of young guys this year that got varsity experience as sophomores and freshmen that will be back next year. We lost all 5 of our starting linemen but I have a lot of confidence in the guys who will fill their roles; some of which had to this year due to injuries.”

What team do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“Obviously opening up with Canfield again this year will be tough, especially with them coming off a state championship win. But in our league I'm sure it will be another tough battle against Alliance like last year.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against?
“Brenden Zurbrugg, Alliance's QB will be one of our toughest players to face, also Salem's linebacker Ross Davidson will make us be efficient on offense.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Obviously I would love the chance to play at the next level in either sport, and while I was growing up I would have to say I would choose baseball, with my dad who played Division 1 baseball being my coach my whole life and getting to look up to him. But after the past two years changed that and I've been able to see my ability and joy in playing the game of football, so I would have to pick football.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“No colleges that I know of have been recruiting me, none have reached out to me that is.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“None.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“No I have not.”

Do you have plans for any trips soon?
“No, not at the moment.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“I've always been and always will be an Ohio State football fan, but most of the time I tend to have favorite college players more than teams, besides Ohio State.”

Q&A with Harvey running back Shahn Alston

How did/is everything going football wise as of late?
“My first year playing football at Harvey has been a great experience. It wasn’t the ending we had hoped for but as a team, we grew and improved a lot over the year.”

What do you feel your team can continue to improve on going forward?
“With leadership and a great offseason, I believe our team will make significant strides next season.”

Have you been pleased with your performances?
“I am pleased with my performances this year, but there is still tons of work needed to be put in to elevate my game for next year.”

How do you feel about the play of your team?
“This year, my team play has been solid, we just need to find a way to finish games. For example, two of our five games were lost by less than a touchdown. If we capitalize on those games that takes us from a 5-5 team that misses the playoffs, to a 7-3 team that makes the playoffs.”

What are your sporting goals going forward as of now?

Q&A with Rocky River quarterback Julian Patti

How did/is everything going football wise as of late?
“[Our] season went pretty well and it was [my] first year as the starting QB on varsity. Unfortunately towards the end of the year I had injuries which led me to miss some quarters and our first round playoff game.”

What do you feel your team can continue to improve on going forward?
“Going forward our team can definitely improve on our passing game and ultimately become a big passing team.”

Have you been pleased with your performances?
“I have been pleased with my season and most of my performances. Some games our team struggled with the pass game, other games the pass game was good.”

How do you feel about the play of your team?

“As of now things are going well, just working hard in the weight room and [doing] skill work with the guys every day.”

What do you feel your team can continue to improve on going forward?
“I feel that we need to be more consistent and be able to execute at all times, but that comes with time. We should have more maturity and experience on the team this year as we’ve been pretty young these past 2 years.”

Have you been pleased with your performances?
“Not really, because when you look back at your mistakes it’s hard to be proud of yourself. The only thing I can do to fix it is work to improve on it because there’s always things to improve on.”

“We have spurts of good football, but we’re just not super consistent yet because we’ve been so young and we need to build confidence.”

What do you feel your team can continue to improve on going forward?
“Our team can just continue to show up and work every day no matter if it is early morning lifting or after school practice, snow or sun. We also just need to keep up the energy every day and keep improving every aspect of our game.”

Have you been pleased with your performances?

“This year, our goal is to win the regional final and claim a state title over the next two games. Next year, personally I want to exceed my performance this year by reaching 2,200 yards and 40 touchdowns. And as a team, repeat our success from this year all the way to the championship. Then I certainly want to play D1 football in college.”

“I have been very pleased with my performances, but I also am just mainly focused on playing for the team and just keep winning. Also, whether it is rushing, receiving, blocking or scoring, I am enjoying the success I’m seeing individually, but most importantly how it is helping the team.”

How do you feel about the play of your team?
“I feel like our very up-tempo style of play is very strong and even though we are a pass heavy offense, we can pound the ball in any style of the game.”

What are your sporting goals going forward as of now?
“This year, our goal is to win the regional final and claim a state title over the next two games. Next year, personally I want to exceed my performance this year by reaching 2,200 yards and 40 touchdowns. And as a team, repeat our success from this year all the way to the championship. Then I certainly want to play D1 football in college.”

Q&A with Kenton quarterback Korbin Johnston
How did/is everything going football wise as of late?
“As of now things are going well, just working hard in the weight room and [doing] skill work with the guys every day.”

What do you feel your team can continue to improve on going forward?
“I feel that we need to be more consistent and be able to execute at all times, but that comes with time. We should have more maturity and experience on the team this year as we’ve been pretty young these past 2 years.”

Have you been pleased with your performances?
“Not really, because when you look back at your mistakes it’s hard to be proud of yourself. The only thing I can do to fix it is work to improve on it because there’s always things to improve on.”

How do you feel about the play of your team?
“We have spurts of good football, but we’re just not super consistent yet because we’ve been so young and we need to build confidence.”

What are your sporting goals going forward as of now?
“Win the WBL back-to-back and win a state championship.”

“The play of our team definitely could’ve been better this year, but we struggled with some injuries. So I’m looking forward to having a way better season and get a good shot at a big run in the playoffs.”

What are your sporting goals going forward as of now?
“My goals are to have over 2000 passing yards and maybe get an offer from an Ivy League school.”

“Some goals I want to achieve include: Ohio Mr. football, First team All-Ohio for the remainder of my high school career, 4-5 star recruit, play division 1 football in college, set an example for the younger kids around me, and elevate the standard for Harvey football.”

What do you feel your team can continue to improve on going forward?

Have you been pleased with your performances?
“I would say my performance has been ok but [there are] definitely things to improve on to help the team.”

How do you feel about the play of your team?
“I feel our team plays very well together and they play for each other most importantly, we all push each other to be our best.”

What are your sporting goals going forward as of now?
“My sporting goals going forward as of now are to have a great winning season in basketball and compete for a league championship with a great group of seniors and passionate coaches.”

Q&A with Niles McKinley running back Antuan Gardner
How has everything with the football season been going so far?
“This football season the team and I faced a lot of adversity with a lot of players being out at the beginning of the season due to injury, including myself.”

Have you been pleased with how you have played this season?
“Unfortunately I was out with injury for a majority of the season and had to come back the last 3 games to finish this season with a cast on my dominant hand. I played very well with my team and made some very great plays.”

How do you feel your team has played?
“Like I said, we faced a lot of adversity this past season. But I believe we played every down like it was our last and played very hard for the guys to the left and right of us.”

What do you feel your team can improve on?
“I feel our team can work on becoming mentally stronger when things go bad. When a team makes big plays, we have to come back on our own instead of hanging our heads early. But we had a very great team. We all were very talented and I would bet on them 10 times out of 10.”

What are the keys for your team being successful going forward?
“Like I said in question 4, really just becoming mentally stronger and taking on adversity a little better than we had.”

Q&A with Black River quarterback Tyler Mrakuzic

How has everything with the football season been going so far?
“Team wise I feel we have really stepped it up in the second half of the season. We started off 0-4 and then have gone to win 5 straight after that. Our main issue was injuries. We lost 6 starters towards the beginning of the season and those younger guys really had to step up.”

Have you been pleased with how you have played this season?
“Week 2 I dislocated my elbow so I was out until week 7, but [for] week 7,8,9 I am pleased [with] how I played. I still have a lot of work to do to get back to 100 percent but I am just happy to be back out there.”

How do you feel your team has played?
“Our team started off pretty poorly and I think that bad energy hit us. Since week 5 though we haven’t lost and everyone has really started to mesh well. Like I said in the other question all the younger guys are stepping up and that has really helped our team a lot.”

What do you feel your team can improve on?
“I feel our main issue that our team has to work on is starting the games off stronger. Lately we have been a second half kind of team but if we can start off the game how we have been in the second half we could be really good.”

What are the keys for your team being successful going forward?
“A key for our team to be better going forward is to leave the last play behind you. We have one bad play and we blame each other and heads go down. If we can get past that it would really help our team.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“I do want to play sports in college. Definitely football if I could [get] the chance.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I have been getting texts from coaches from Hiram and Ohio Northern. Also notes from Wooster College but not complete recruiting yet.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“Wooster sends a letter out every week so I would have to say they are but like I said in the last question, no real recruitment yet.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“I haven’t made any college trips yet, hopefully I can soon.”

Do you have plans for game day trips?
“I’ve been invited to a couple of game day trips and I am going to try to go to one this weekend.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“Growing up my whole family was Ohio State fans, so they are my favorite. I also always kept up with Oregon as well.”
